Instructions to Prepare Your Personal Brand for a Job Search The most effective method to Prepare Your Personal Brand for a Job Search Youve likely observed the term individual marking in online journals and articles as youve been getting ready for your pursuit of employment, however you may not be completely sure what it implies. Individual marking is the manner by which an applicant bundles their aptitudes, foundation, experience, and open persona so as to showcase themselves to expected managers. A solid individual brand picture could mean getting the activity you had always wanted, while an inadequately kept up one could hurt your odds â€" or much more terrible, get you precluded from thought totally. Since getting and keeping a line of work is tied in with advertising yourself appropriately, its a smart thought to take a moment to find out about a few key focuses in regards to how to boost your own image: Take care of Your Personal business â€" Your Social Media Closet The primary spot bosses take care of theyve seen your resume is your web based life presence. In certainty, an ongoing overview from CareerBuilder found that 60 percent of managers research applicants on person to person communication locales. That is a 8 percent expansion from a years ago review. Organizations need to realize that theyre recruiting individuals with character and trustworthiness, so you need to ensure that all that you post on the Internet illuminates yourself. Bosses likewise focus on the manners by which your web-based social networking action thinks about inadequately you. Your direct on the Internet can have some genuine negative results on your pursuit of employment: In CareerBuilders review, 49 percent of the recruiting directors who said they screen applicants via web-based networking media likewise said theyve discovered data in their examination that has driven them to choose not to enlist a competitor. A portion of the substance that most usually causes employing directors to avoid an applicant incorporates: - Provocative or improper photos, recordings, or data â€" 46 percent of recruiting chiefs said theyve not employed an up-and-comer in the wake of finding these things on their web based life accounts - Information about an up-and-comer drinking or utilizing drugs â€" 43 percent - Discriminatory remarks identified with race, religion, sexual orientation, and so forth â€" 33 percent - Candidate insulted past organization or individual representative â€" 31 percent - Poor relational abilities â€" 29 percent This isn't to state that you cant go out with your companions and make some great memories when youre in a quest for new employment. You need to take control of your Internet footprint and reshape the data that can be found about you. One of the main things I encourage any customer to do is update their LinkedIn profile with the goal that it is 100 percent precise and depicts them as a certified proficient. LinkedIn is all around listed by Google, so when a spotter look through your name on the web, your LinkedIn profile is probably going to be one of the principal results they see. LinkedIn is additionally an extraordinary method to showcase projects youve dealt with, papers youve distributed, and interviews in which youve been cited. In the event that you like to compose or have an online portfolio to flaunt, its a smart thought to buy your own site area, for example, JohnSmith.com. In the event that you can't buy your own area, you can liberate up a site for on a stage like WordPress. Most likely not, but you may recollect where she worked. After such a long time, one prominent detail the vast majority can review about that bizarre occasion is that the lady worked for NASA. The Dangers Of The Average Of 5 Rule

The Dangers of the “Average of 5” Rule I have learned profound wisdom from Jim Rohn, but one thing he taught, which many other coaches echo, is that we are the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. The advice around this is to surround yourself with people who already have aspects of the life that you want for yourself to elevate your station in life. One study confirmed that it’s not only the five people closest to you, but also the people who are close to them, and so on. The reason, they identified, was norms. “Your perception of what is… acceptable … and your behavior changes” according to what you see more regularly. A few dangers could arise from  following the “average of 5” rule too strictly. Let’s explore some of them. On one hand, if you aspire to be a visionary entrepreneur, by all means, seek out opportunities to spend time among visionary entrepreneurs. Spending time with people who have achieved what you aspire to achieve is one great way to keep you motivated, and it serves as a pull rather than a push. It will also most likely shorten your path from current reality to achieving your desired reality if you can learn from them how to overcome challenges, navigate most successfully, and expand your sphere of influence to include people in theirs. On the other hand, people use this “average of 5”  rule to justify cutting poor or unambitious people out of your life. I do agree that, while very hard, it’s important for self-preservation to put distance between you and toxic people in your life â€" those who seem to intentionally make you feel bad, whether conscious or subconscious. However, we know it happens â€" some people make it big and forget where they came from. They lose touch with the struggles of everyday people. It’s why self-aware executives participate in the show Undercover Boss. Even if you don’t intend to, you can forget the reality of not having money, status, luxury items and vacations, etc. Yet another problem is that sometimes people do get left behind, and you can’t make and keep any guarantees. Sometimes naturally, just as a byproduct of growing and changing your lifestyle, things you once had in common with people shift. You can become people that no longer have the same struggles that originally bonded you. The bonds can weaken and you could become unrelatable to each other. Sometimes ego is in the way of someone else wanting more for you (e.g. why should you get what they don’t have). Other times, people will “punch holes” in your plans because they fear losing you. They fear you changing or they fear being left behind. In another possible scenario, they could genuinely believe that you’re more likely to fail than succeed, which is really a reflection of their norms, and they are trying to “save you” from getting hurt or disappointed. When people get left behind, the divide can widen. Feelings of hurt can manifest as anger and resentment. One person can turn the rest of your old crew against you. Now, on the bright side,  people can just as easily become more likely to succeed because you do â€" the same way you are more likely to smoke or gain weight along with those closest to you. So it stands to reason that if you intend to follow this advice, and cut out or intentionally distance yourself from these people who are below your measure of achievement, then their chances of being positively impacted by your success is much less. Another danger is falling into a new crowd that may elevate your pay or status, but denigrate your core values. If you are not mindful of keeping your norms aligned with your values, you may start to lose touch with your values and act in ways that start to seem acceptable, because more of your close contacts act in those ways, even if they are in direct conflict to what you had decided individually were your values. Think about the celebrity college scandal. Even in that illegal situation, one person allegedly involved couldn’t see what was wrong with it â€" everyone was doing it. Still more dangerous is this “go get yours,” “rugged individualism,” “drop the baggage holding you down” mentality.   While we are fighting as a nation about how to deal with mass shootings, seeing how we put controls on guns without taking away freedoms, and knowing that mental illnesses are on the rise and also contribute. What to do about this seems to escape us, except to try to strip away the stigma so that we can get that conversation going. Leaving people behind can also be dangerous. There is another way to look at this. As per my last blog about raising corporate consciousness, just as people can elevate so much further in income and status and become removed from their poorer or less ambitious connections, people can also evolve too far in consciousness and lose touch. Not all of us will be monks or spiritual gurus and live a life detached from material things altogether. It seems so far fetched. Most of us will not risk our 9-5 jobs, healthcare, etc. to chase butterflies, so to speak. However, some people have found ways to live in which their lifestyles are provided for as a result of imparting their wisdom to a following or tribe. Though the average everyday person* can certainly glean wisdom from these teachers, there is too much dissonance from the current reality of a guru to the current reality of an everyday person for a guru to serve as a true model. * Let’s define the everyday person as someone who works for someone else to generate their income, carries some debt, follows a budget out of necessity, and would need a loan for very large purchases. This person may have religious beliefs but is not necessarily living according to them at all moments. Life is challenging, and sometimes also very time-consuming. So much so that self-care, self-reflection, and spiritual practices are sacrificed. We need people at various levels in the middle to serve as ladders, to stay relatable and somewhat in resonance with the lower levels to inspire them to elevate. So, if you’ve heard this advice and it felt wrong to assess your friends and family’s worthiness of being close to you, honor those feelings. Do bring new people into your sphere of influence to help you elevate, but keep your hand outreached to those below. Not everyone will be willing to take your hand, especially if your rise has been less than gracious. However, work with the willing, and, based on the science backing up the “average of 5” rule, gradually more and more will elevate at their own pace. Unemployment Is Not Easy Money

Unemployment is NOT Easy Money Unemployment Office by Bytemarks of Flickr If you are on unemployment and doing contracting for temp work, you need to know this… Honesty is always the best policy. Sometimes being honest can hurt you financially in the short-term, but being dishonest can certainly hurt you worse in the long-term. Learn from my experience. I have received unemployment benefits from two states throughout my career, in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. My first career was in radio, and I tried to make a go at a full-time career, but also needed to afford living on my own. I discovered that a better financial decision was to work long-term temp assignments full-time while working nights and weekends in radio. A company that I had worked at for 10 months was reorganizing and laying off people, and I was relieved from my assignment. It was usually no more than two weeks in between long-term temp assignments, but this particular gap was longer than normal. I had no idea that I could receive partial unemployment benefits until a co-worker at the radio station informed me. So, I filed for partial unemployment, which enabled me to pay my bills. I picked up extra hours at the radio station doing voiceover projects, and continued to lobby for a full-time position there while pursuing other full-time jobs in broadcasting, sales and marketing both in New Jersey and back home in Pennsylvania. The temp agency was fully aware of my intentions to find a full-time, permanent position, but that I was willing to work another long-term assignment. After all, it was really a great way to test out different companies, different industries, and different roles. This is how I discovered recruiting and decided to pursue it eventually. The assignment they offered me, however, were one to two week stints. There was also a critical need for augmented staff and because of that, I would not have been permitted to take any time off to have an interview for a full-time position, so I turned it down. That’s when I realized that unemployment is not easy money. The temp agency reported I had turned down work to the state of New Jersey. I received notification that, not only would my unemployment benefits halt immediately, but they were billing me for all of the unemployment benefits I had already receivedâ€" the money I had already spent on bills. Thankfully, there were a couple of opportunities that were in progress. One was door-to-door sales, which was very outside of my comfort zone, but I knew I would gain great training and skills that I would apply to my eventual recruiting career. It was commission only, and was back in Pennsylvania, so I had to move. The other opportunity was advertising sales for a newspaper, and it required that I work six days a week including holidays, and didn’t pay as well as most of the temp jobs that I had worked. Additionally, it offered very little room for growth (I doubt if this newspaper is even still around). While I relocated myself back home to live with my bachelor father, I complied with the appeals process for the state of New Jersey. If you have ever moved you know how chaotic that time can be. Imagine the additional administrative burden of dealing with state government, learning and starting a new job where income is only earned if you make a sale, and I was wrapping up a nearly two-year relationship that had gone south. I am so thankful that I kept great records of every company to which I applied and every follow-up action that I took, because I was attempting to prove to the state that I was only denying short-term work because it inhibited my ability to look for long-term work. Being able to show the state all of my efforts proved my case. I was about a month into my new job already when a trial-by-phone with a judge finally occurred. I was very straightforward. “Yes, I did deny work with X Staffing Company.” I was able to show them that I had an interview already scheduled with an employer for a full-time permanent position. I empathized with the judge, stating that I know many people take advantage of the system. However, I had taken on extra hours at the radio station whenever possible, had documented very well how actively I was seeking full-time permanent positions, and had eventually landed so that I was no longer a burden to the system. I was no longer dependent on unemployment benefits. The judge found in my favor. I was not required to pay back the unemployment compensation. Fast forward years later, I was recruiting for an IT consulting firm. Consultants in between assignments sometimes filed for unemployment compensation, and we kept records of when a consultant receiving benefits “on us” turned down “reasonable” work. What I have learned from both this experience and two other experiences with unemployment, is that not only is honesty the best policy, but also keep great records of all of your activities (we offer our Epic Careering Tool Kit for just this purpose) and make sure you do not have to rely on unemployment benefits for very long. I know a lot of out of work job seekers perceive that investing in services like ours is like spending money that might be needed to pay bills. In reality, and all too often, the investment isn’t made, and money runs out because a job is not landed, and I hear, “I should’ve engaged you last year.” I literally heard these very words twice this month. I will not let you invest your money in our branding services if it is not going to pay off in a job; it is why we offer free consultations. You get to try us out, but we also make sure that the challenges that you have are ones we can help you overcome. The most effective method to Deal With an Incompetent Boss The vast majority feel judged and criticized at their working environment. Some of the time this is controlled by their creative mind and feelings of resentment they have against their managers, yet at times their supervisors are extremely awkward and they reserve each privilege to grumble. Do Hiring Managers Discriminate Against Asian Candidates - Workology

Do Hiring Managers Discriminate Against Asian Candidates Do Hiring Managers Discriminate Against Asian Candidates? According to a new study, candidates with names of Asian origin are less likely to book interviews. The  joint Ryerson Munk School of Business  and University of Toronto study found that even when Asian candidates had higher degrees and better resumes than other applicants, they still landed fewer interviews and obviously, were therefore less likely to get the job. Researchers  used data from a 2011 discrimination audit where Canadian employers were sent 12,910 resumes in response to 3,225 job postings, and the study recorded whether the employers called to request an interview. The resumes were computer-generated and had candidate names from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. They found that name discrimination was still prevalent, but strikingly, was more common at small employers. Do Hiring Managers Discriminate Against Asian Candidates? Asian applicants received about 20% fewer calls from  large employers, and almost 40% fewer calls from  small employers.  Candidates with some or all foreign qualifications received 35% fewer calls from  large employers, and over 69%  fewer calls from  small employers. Skill levels also played a part in how hiring managers responded to resumes. For low skilled jobs, hiring managers were less likely to discriminate against candidates with Asian names or foreign qualifications. According to the authors, while overall the Asian-named applicants had about 53.3 percent less chance of receiving a call-back if they had some foreign qualifications, this number rises to 58.5 percent for applicants to high skill jobs; for applicants to low-skill jobs the Asian applicants were 45.7 percent less likely to receive a call. Studies have consistently shown that hiring discrimination at the point of resume assessment is still a big problem. Recruiters and hiring managers discriminate based on gender, names, schools and a variety of other factors but they arent always doing do consciously. Its easy to recognized our vocally bigoted or biased colleagues, but much hard to recognize and root out our own unconscious biases its why so many companies are flirting with the possibility of incorporating AI into the hiring process. (Although weve already seen that we often program our biases into hiring bots.) On the candidate side, some  applicants have whitened their names and resumes in order to book interviews, altering aspects of their resume that might reveal their ethnicity, for example, membership in a South Asian young entrepreneurs  club. Its not just in Hollywood that people switch from  Vera Mindy Chokalingam to  Mindy Kaling, or  Kalpen Modi to  Kal Penn. The authors of the study, Rupa Banerjee, Jeffrey G. Reitz and Phil Oreopoulos recommend randomized resume assessment, with names removed, as a good first step in tackling name discrimination in hiring. This might shift the needle when it comes to diverse candidates booking interviews, but its just one step. There is so much more to do.

Job Seekers-Whos Got Your Back

Employment Seekers-Whos Got Your Back At the point when I was a child, I cherished jumping. I spent each mid year at a local pool club and working on plunging for quite a long time. My most loved and best plunge was the folding blade. So as to execute appropriately on a folding blade, you need a great deal of tallness off the load up so you have time while noticeable all around to contact your toes and afterward reposition your body into a plunging position to enter the water. The best jack-knifes were accomplished with what was known as a twofold ricochet. Another child would remain behind you on the plunging board and mirror your means. They expected to seize the very same time as the jumper so as to give the jumper an incredible ricochet and extra tallness for the plunge. On the off chance that the planning was off the jumper would lose their balance and have a below average plunge, or more awful yet, simply tumble off the board. In any case, when done accurately, the twofold bob was astonishing. It permitted you to en counter weightlessness only somewhat more and it was a superb ride. What's more, this must be accomplished if there was somebody behind you who was truly atune to your plunging style and stepssomeone who had your back.Once the jump was contended, it was the bouncers employment to investigate the plunge. What's more, they were never expected to gloss over their audit. Each part of the jump was disected: was your arrangement right, were your toes pointed, were your developments jerky or smooth, was there an excessive amount of sprinkle upon passage into the waterall these focuses were thought of and we invited the criticism since we truly needed to consummate our dives. My closest companion at the time was my plunging mate and the individual who was consistently behind me at once bob. The way that she had the option to time her means and bounces with mine so impeccably still stuns meshe was a decent seven inches taller than me and her plunging style was very not the same as mine. Howev er, she watched and tuned in and rehearsed and had a similar want as me to succeed. Also, that is the thing that made it work.I was helped to remember my jumping mate as of late while reading Keith Ferrazzis new book, Whos Got Your Back. Keith suggests discovering three individuals who will have your back and assist you with succeeding expertly and actually. He advises us that the best individuals to contact are the individuals who we can open our powerlessness to, expect authentic feedback from, and trust to consider us responsible for finishing on our arrangements and dreams. Every now and again, the ideal individual for the organization isn't our dear companion or even a relative, on the grounds that these individuals might be mentioning to us what they think we need to hear as opposed to what we have to know.Job searchers truly need confided in guides that they can be straightforward with and be responsible to. Nobody ought to be required to go only it and I suggest that all a ctivity searchers have an amigo to impart tips and exhortation to and request input from. At the point when I was on that plunging load up, there was a sure helplessness; a specific visually impaired spotYou cannot watch yourself making a plunge continuous, so you have to depend on a spectator to assist you with making the fundamental remedies. The equivalent can be said for quest for new employment. Now and again a mate can assist you with amending the vulnerable sides you may have as work searcher so you can proceed to execute a progressively fruitful technique.

Study finds that this is what we care most about when it comes to trusting professionals

Study finds this is the thing that we care most about with regards to confiding in experts Study finds this is the thing that we care most about with regards to confiding in experts As progressions in innovation keep on making information increasingly available, an unfriendliness toward experts develops in beginners. Writer Tom Nichols succinctly identified the reason for this growing mistrust: A Google-energized, Wikipedia-based, blog-drenched breakdown of any division among experts and laymen, understudies and educators, knowers and wonderers.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This marvel can be distinguished in each part of our general public, however another investigation led via Airtasker finds our aggregate Pyrrhonism all the more straightforwardly by means of a gigantic investigation of people all things considered and foundations. Extensively, a survey of the outcomes recommends factors other than narcissistic obliviousness. Our eagerness to believe experts relies upon pragmatic contemplations like understanding and training level for example, in a ddition to senseless tribalistic ones like sexual direction, race, and sex; a hodgepodge, proposed to be thought about while taking other factors into consideration given the information depends overwhelmingly on self-reporting.The pool of 1,001 American respondents used in Airtasker's investigation was included 95 children of post war America, 271 Gen Xers, 618 twenty to thirty year olds, and 17 individuals from outside those predetermined ages. 400 and ninety-five of the members were female, 502 were male, and four respondents picked neither gender. These members were indicated randomized photos of people of various races and sexual orientations for differing occupations. The surveyees were then asked the amount they confided in the individual photographed in their particular occupation.A breakdown of trustAs far as callings alone are concerned, specialists are the most confided in laborers of the six occupations included.Interestingly enough, when members were approached to rank the characteristics that most educated their degree regarding trust, race and sexuality were seen as the least important. The best three? Experience, Education, and sincerity. The significance of these qualifiers differed dependent on different forerunners, in any case. For example, despite the fact that experience and training conveyed a great deal of weight in all cases, African American workers picked up the most trust as specialists (over 93%), handymen, (over 90%), drivers (about 92%), and mechanics (66%). Asian experts were the most trusted as housekeepers and IT workers. Ethnicity factors affected nonconformists' choice to confide in a representative of any field much not as much as respondents that revealed preservationist sees. Over 73% of members that distinguished as nonconformists, said it didn't make a difference if the individual working in their home didn't talk familiar English, contrasted with 54% of preservationists that approved this. For a few callings, in parti cular, IT laborers and drivers, sexual orientation seemed to assume no huge job in trust, yet different enterprises displayed some fascinating ambiguities. Eighty-nine percent favored having a male handyman contrasted with 78% that said they would confide in a female one to carry out the responsibility. Practically 69% of respondents said that they favored a man to move their furniture, with an extra 63% communicating a comparable view about the finishing of home fix ventures. Ready for Promotion 10 Steps to Stepping Up

Ready for Promotion 10 Steps to Stepping Up Imagine its  Monday morning. Are you relishing the week or are you seeing it as Day 1 of a new hostage situation? Are you managed by a moron, captive in a role youve out-grown and fearful that the smell in your nostrils is that of your career, stagnating? If so, its time to move up or move on. Youre under-utilised, highly employable and a person of action (right?), but storming into your bosss office, pounding the table and demanding your just rights â€" promotion or youll walk â€" is highly unlikely to deliver what you want.  A deep rooted certainty that you know best, a conviction that everyone else is inadequate and threats amounting to blackmail are no basis for convincing anyone you’re a team player and ready for more responsibility. So what is? Step 1 Imagine yourself attending an interview for that next step-up role. Ask yourself three questions: What role are you applying for? What’s the scope of responsibility? What might you be expected to achieve? If you were applying for a vacant role, then that thinking would have been done already by your potential future boss. In your case, you have a blank canvas on which you can imagine your ideal role or your next logical career step. Step 2 Consider the practicalities. Think about how your imagined role fits within the organisation. Are you focusing on your boss’s job, or a new role entirely? Where does the company have problems? For a new role, how could a new appointment and a change in structure be brought about? What are the benefits of doing so? Step 3 Now work out why someone should appoint you. Why are you suitable? What have you done previously that indicates you can take on extra responsibility? Why are you better than other candidates that might be found? How would you approach starting the job? What would you look to achieve in your new role? Step 4 Make a final decision. If you decide that the step is too great today that’s not a problem, your thinking will help you identify where you’re weak. You can start to bolster that immediately, secure in the knowledge you’re being a proactive career builder, not just a moaning Minnie or a critical Colin. Step 5 Commit. Nail your flag to the mast and set sail before the tide turns by booking an appointment with either your boss or HR. The formality signals they’ll need to pay attention, you’re not just cruising by for a casual drop-in no-worries chat. If you’re asked for a reason, avoid the word promotion and stay non-threatening. “Hey boss? You’ve had your go and I’m thinking you should move on,” will see you facing a well armed wall of negativity before you even get in the room. Step 6 Keep things open. Run the discussion as an enquiry, not a demand. Let your boss know that you believe you’re ready to look at taking on more. State why you think the time is right, but keep it short, sharp and focused â€" this is no time for a rambling discourse on the bleak path of your career-life to date. As a matter of strategy, ask your boss how they see things and what opportunities there could be. You never know what they might surprise you with, plus you don’t risk selling yourself short. Step 7 Be patient and realistic. The ideal result would be a prompt, defined and supportive well-structured plan that could include further training. Congratulations and a glass of something celebratory would be in order. The sub-optimal result would be a load of wooly promises accompanied by, ‘We’re working on it. It will all take time and it’s a bit complicated’. If your boss looks shifty and sounds nervous, it’s a fair bet you’re driving into a blind alley. Step 8 Look grateful. Whatever comes back, or doesn’t, look and sound appreciative. If you’ve now got a new role to look forward to, be thankful for the help and support. If you’re disappointed, gutted even, there’s no benefit in showing it. Step 9 Set a new course. If you haven’t got the result you want, it’s time to look outside. Thankfully, all of your earlier thinking will help you to focus on the type of role to look for and help you draw together a much stronger CV. Step 10 Set a deadline for action. Today. Now. Make it this Friday. This is really hard to do when you feel like you’ve just been kicked in the teeth, but trust me, it’s the best therapy. Aim to find something to apply to by the end of the week. Look for ads, but if you don’t find any, target suitable employers directly. Don’t let the days, weeks and months just slip by in a sea of demotivation. In conclusion, one way or another, you’re moving forward. You made a decision, thought it through and took some actions. If your existing employer won’t recognise your potential it’s their loss, so find a more enlightened one that will. You’ve already proved that you’re capable of taking on more, by having the guts to do what you’ve done already. Too many people just sit and wait for the job fairy to happen by. It’s your life and your career, hit it hard! I wish you well with it, good hunting and always remember â€" no prisoners. How to get along with difficult co-workers

How to get along with difficult co-workers People with good social skills can get along with almost anyone, and if you want to be successful in your career, you have to make people like you: Figure out what matters to them, what makes them tick, and then speak to that when you interact. The key to being likeable is to be able to adapt yourself to different situations. This does not mean that you have to be someone youre not. Each of us is complicated, adaptable and curious. You need to know yourself well enough to understand a broad range of facets of yourself so that you can call up the right one with the right crowd. The field of psychology that focuses on this particular issue is social psychology. And, fortunately, we have massive amounts of data from clinical research to tell us how thoughts, feelings, and behavior of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others: Use this research to train yourself to be someone everyone wants to work with. Think hard about how you approach a group. Do you hope that the group conforms to you or do you conform to the group? As long as you respect the people in the group, conforming to them enough to form a bond is not a bad idea. No one can be with their soul mate 100% of the day. But you can find pieces of yourself that match up with just about everyone, if you are in-tune with yourself and other people. Social psychologists call people who analyze social situations and try to match their public self to the situation high self-monitors. Self-monitors are very good at gauging what their audience expects in each given situation. And these people are very sensitive to impression management techniques they watch other people use them and then use the techniques themselves. For some people, this skill of monitoring themselves within a group comes naturally they are chameleons who can mirror other peoples moods. Chameleons know what to say when their bosss pet gerbil dies and they know what to say when a co-worker suggests a date. Other people are low self-monitors. These people attempt to alter a situation to match their private self. These people have one way of conducting themselves and have no idea how to change for a given situation. These are the people who make inappropriate jokes at a client meeting or are too stiff and formal at a company picnic. Chameleons generally disgust these low self-monitors, but Ive got news for you: chameleons dont lose opportunities for being difficult to work with. If you can get along with different groups of people, you wont just be liked more at work, youll be more equipped to meet your personal goals. People who are able to develop friendships with a wide range of people are more able to change the way they think about themselves, according to Tracy McLaughlin-Volpe, professor of psychology at University of Vermont. Developing cross-group friendships as opposed to in-group friendships makes your more adept at creating a dynamic image of yourself you are likely to be a person who can make changes to become the person you want to be. You want to be someone who can make changes in yourself when you see the need, because social psychologists have also found that people remember negative traits more than positive traits. So if you tell a new employee your boss is smart, open-minded, kind and disorganized, the new employee will form an opinion of the boss primarily on disorganized. Your bad traits have more sticking power on your reputation than your good traits. If you want to be liked, face up to your weaknesses and compensate for them. Most people who hate office social dynamics think people have to change who they are to succeed. But good social skills at work are really a reflection of empathy for the people around you. Anyone who is being their best self kind, considerate, expressive, interested in others will instinctively do the right thing at the office.

8 Steps to Your Pre-Interview Social Media Clean Up

8 Steps to Your Pre-Interview Social Media Clean Up Its the moment youve spent the past two months waiting for! Finally, following  day after day of scouring job boards, sending out resumes and cover letters, and hearing nothing but radio silence in return, you get an interview. Better yet, you hear back from an employer who might just be ready to offer you your dream job. Youre so excited that it almost feels like youve landed the job already, but you manage to calm yourself down long enough to start thinking about preparation. You really wantâ€"and needâ€"this job. How can you put yourself in a better position to land it? Interview preparation is one obvious step, but anotherâ€"and one that job seekers overlook all too oftenâ€"is social media clean up. With that point in mind, here are 8 steps to follow to help you make sure your social profiles are something youd be okay with a hiring manager seeing. 1. Delete your own questionable posts While you might cut loose on the internet a bit more than you would in real life, hiring managers who look at social media will still view what you post online as a reflection of who you are. If youre frequently rude, profane, or offensive, those attributes can be turn-offs. If you frequently make posts loaded with typos or misspellings, it makes you look less intelligent and less qualified for most jobs. If you go on frequent political rants, you might mark yourself as someone who cant respect the opinions of others. There are many, many ways that you can make yourself look like a less desirable applicant on social media, so go through your recent posts and delete anything that muddies the image you want to present. 2. Delete your questionable photos Cleaning up your Facebook photos should be a pretty easy step in this process. Anything that makes you look professional or respectable is good. Photos with family and friends are great; professional headshots are even better. However, if you still have pictures lingering online from your drunken college escapades, now is the time to scrub them. Photos that depict drinking, drug use, illegal activities, and anything overtly sexual dont play well with employers. 3. Untag yourself in undesirable photos that you didnt post If youre lucky, any racy photos of you will be the ones you posted. If your friend uploaded and tagged you in something less-than-professional, though, you might have a bit more trouble getting rid of it. In a pinch, Facebook will let you untag yourself from any photos you dont want to have popping up on your profile. This action should keep any potential employers from seeing those picturesâ€"though its still not a bad idea to ask your friend to take down any offending images. 4. Choose a professional photo as your profile picture We made mention of professional headshots above. If youve got one, make it your profile picture. This statement applies to any social media account, whether its Facebook, LinkedIn, or even Twitter. The professional picture sends an almost unconscious signal to a prospective employer that you are hirable material. 5. Dont talk about work on social media While you scour your social feeds for profanity or offensive jokes, also look out for any posts where you talked about work. Bringing your professional life into the realm of social media is a sticky situation, whether youre complaining about a boss or talking about a project youre working on. In the first scenario, youre badmouthing an employerâ€"an obvious way to get your resume tossed in the trash, if and when hiring managers see it. In the second scenario, you could be divulging trade secrets or other details that are supposed to remain more or less confidential. In either case, you can expect prospective employers to be a bit wary about hiring someone who talks about work online, so set a rule for yourself to avoid those kinds of discussions. 6. Update your info on Facebook Believe it or not, there is now a possibility that youve had a Facebook for longer than a decade. Because of how long some people go without updating their information, theres a possibility that certain parts of your profileâ€"like your About Me and Favorite Quotes sectionsâ€"may have gone five or six years without an update. Most of the people who know you personally have probably been friends with you on Facebook for long enough that they never look at these inner sanctums of your profile. However, you never know what a prospective employer might look at, so go to your homepage (click your name in the top left corner of the page, right below the Facebook logo) and then click Update Info. You will be able to review your profile, delete anything that is no longer true (or has become downright embarrassing), and present a more accurate compendium of who you are. 7. Update your LinkedIn A lot of employers will look at LinkedIt, but its rarer for most peopleâ€"especially younger professionalsâ€"to spend much time on the network. As a result, its easy to let your LinkedIn profile fall by the wayside: an old, out-of-date photo; an online resume that hasnt been updated in years; a dozen or two of pending connections; etc. Count on your employer checking out your LinkedIn and spend an hour or so getting it as up to date as possible. Even if you dont use LinkedIn much, it can still be your professional face online. 8. Keep your Twitter feed interesting: Facebook and LinkedIn are the top two social networks of interest for most employers. However, if a hiring manager does find and scroll through your Twitter, you want it to look like the feed of an interesting, thoughtful, professional, and ambitious person. Specifically, you can use your Twitter to look like someone who is genuinely interested in the minutia of their field. Post articles associated with your job industry, follow accounts of other professionals and figures in the field, or even post your own articles or thoughts on hot topics that pertain to the career path you want to take. Even if your prospective employer doesnt see your Twitterâ€"and even if you dont get the jobâ€"getting involved in the online conversation about your industry can only help you in the long run. Not all employers are going to look at social media before making a hiring decision. Others will only give cursory views to your accounts. However, there is always the chance that a hiring manager will spend a fair amount of time researching you online, and if that happens, you want to be ready. The eight steps provided above will help you fix up your internet presence to the point where its almost as impressive as your resume. What Job Seekers Need to Know About ATS

What Job Seekers Need to Know About ATS To increase job search success, all job seekers need to know what ATS is and how it works. ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It is estimated that most major companies use these systems to screen incoming resumes. If you apply for a position online it is likely you are applying through an ATS. ATS is challenging because it involves computerized algorithms of chosen keywords and phrases to help find the right match between a submitted resume and an open position. The problem is no two systems are alike and you never know exactly what the system is searching for or how it weighs content. If your resume is not formatted the right way, with the right keywords and phrases, it could rank as a poor match in ATS â€" regardless of your qualifications. This is challenging for most job seekers (hence the reason online applications have such a low success rate). Some advice to help optimize your resume for ATS application includes: 1. Use a version of the resume that is easy to read. It is recommended you use a Word format that is optimized for the system (read more in Overcoming ATS Resume Myths). ATS looks primarily at content, therefore there is a strong likelihood that any graphics will not be ‘seen’, so ensure you translate image/graphic/chart information into the body of the file. It is also best to use traditional headers in clearly defined sections (Work Experience, Education) so the system can locate key details. The length of the resume also does not matter in an ATS. 2. Populate your resume with keywords from the targeted job posting. This means customizing each application to address the readers needs. However, dont just stuff your resume full of keywords the system will be searching for keywords used in proper context. Good content is still very important. Remember, once the resume makes it through the system an actual person will read it and the employer will be searching for clear skill demonstration proof of skill not just fluff. 3. Always follow the instructions of each individual job site when applying for positions. Almost all ATS systems can read .docx Word files and some systems can read PDFs. Others will also allow plain text (.txt) uploads. The system should specify which formats it accepts. An optimized Word file is ‘the best of both worlds’ because when created effectively it can be both ATS-friendly and eye-friendly (once it makes it through the system an actual person will likely review it). If provided with an option to upload a copy of your nicely formatted colour/graphic PDF resume, do so. It will retain format and be more pleasing for the eventual human reader.
